About WSD Athletics

The Wisconsin School for the Deaf Firebirds Athletics is a member of the National Deaf Interscholastic Athletic Association (NDIAA). The vision of NDIAA is to promote and recognize the growth and achievements of the Deaf interscholastic programs including athletes and coaches. The NDIAA encourages a competitive environment where fair play and character development is essential. (Adapted by NDIAA).

Our high school athletic conference is the Indian Trials Conference (ITC). Ten schools participate in boys’ and girls’ sports. In football, WSD is a member of the Great Plains Schools for the Deaf (GPSD) Conference.

We are also members of the Great Plains Schools for the Deaf (GPSD) and participate in GPSD volleyball, basketball & cheerleading, track & field and Academic Triathlon (Academic Bowl, ASL Bowl and Oratorical Bowl) tournaments. We were originally members of the Central States Schools for the Deaf (CSSD).

The WSD Special Olympics athletic teams are members of the Wisconsin Special Olympics Association and participate in the State bowling, snowshoeing, basketball, and track & field Championships.

The requirements for students to participate in interscholastic athletics is to have a current sports physical and parental permission on file at school before participating on the team.
