The Role of an Intervener

An intervener is a designated related service provider who works one-on-one with an individual who is deafblind. An intervener works to develop and use receptive and expressive communication skills with an individual who is deafblind. An intervener works to build concepts and increase conceptual understanding for an individual who has a combined vision and hearing loss. Access to the environmental information that their hearing and sighted peers receive, is provided to the individual who is deafblind by an intervener. Additionally, an intervener builds and maintains a trusting and interactive relationship with the individual who is deafblind as well as assists in establishing relationships with others to help promote social and emotional well-being.

The Office of Special Education Programs (OSEP) recognizes interveners as a related service for a child who has combined vision and hearing loss. (Letter to McDowell)
