Auditory Processing Disorders (APDs): Addressing Students’ Needs As a Team

9:00 am 3:15 pm
October 1, 2020

Virtual Workshop Sponsored by CESA 10 and Outreach Services

Workshop link and materials will be emailed to registered participants.

Assessing and treating auditory processing disorders may be complex but it need not be complicated. By understanding the neuroscientific foundations of auditory processing and the continuum of skills encompassed by that term, we can develop assessment tools that clarify the nature of the academic, communicative, and social-emotional challenges observed among school-age learners.

Knowing “what’s driving the bus” informs our intervention process, enabling the educational team to develop effective plans of remediation and accommodations that reduce or resolve specific deficiencies, minimize the impact of impaired processing in the learner’s life, and maximize school-based resources.

Learning Outcomes: After this activity, participants will be able to:

  • describe continuum and development of auditory processing skills.
  • describe referral criteria and screening for AP assessments.
  • describe assessment techniques that probe skills along the processing
    continuum.
  • describe behavioral characteristics and educational impact of various
    auditory processing deficits.
  • describe effective intervention strategies for use at home and school.

Presenter: Dr. Jeanane M Ferre, Ph.D., CCC-A

Target Audience: Educational Audiologists, Teachers of the D/HH, School Psychologists, Administrators, Pupil Services/Special Education Directors, Speech-Language Clinicians, and other related service providers

Cost: No charge

Registration: You can register via MyQuickReg. You can also register by contacting Shari Owen at sowen@cesa10.k12.wi.us.

Register early - Registration is limited. Workshop link and materials will be emailed to registered participants the week before the training.

Agenda

9am-10:30am Foundations of APs

  • Overview of continuum of skills and the “neurogeography” of auditory processing, shared symptomatology across sensory processing, cognitive-linguistic, and neurcognitive disorders
  • Why assess for APDs, when and who to assess for APD, screening

BREAK

10:45am-12:15pm Understanding AP test results

  • Deficit profiles that reveal auditory-specific dysfunction, profiles that inform assessments in other neurocognitive/neuropsychologic skill sets
  • Impact of APDs on academics, communication, and psychosocial development – what do the results mean for the student

LUNCH BREAK

1pm-2:30pm Intervention for APDs

  • Deficit-specific remediation and how to implement remediation in an IEP
  • Management strategies for use at school and home including RtI and 504-plan accommodations

BREAK

2:45pm-3:15pm Group discussion

  • Questions and Answers
  • Summary comments
  • Audience-generated cases for review
