This council advises the State Superintendent of the Department of Public Instruction in matters pertaining to educational services for children and youth who are deaf or hard of hearing. For specific information related to the council’s activities, please contact Marla Walsh, Director of Wisconsin Educational Services Program for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (WESP-DHH).

Specifically, this council carries out this function by identifying and prioritizing issues and needs of children and youth who are deaf and hard of hearing in the state of Wisconsin, acting as a conduit between professionals in the field of education and the policy bodies of the state. Recommendations are developed that facilitate educational opportunities for children and youth who are deaf and hard of hearing with input from professionals involved in providing educational opportunities for these children. The Superintendent’s Advisory Council on Deaf and Hard of Hearing Programs is mandated by Wisconsin State Statute 15.377(2).

Are you, or someone you know passionate about special education in Wisconsin, collaborative, and willing to share their voice? Please consider making a nomination for a three-year term to the State Superintendent’s Advisory Council on DHH Programs. The meetings take place quarterly (fall, winter, spring, early summer) from approximately 9:30am-3:30pm. The role of the Council is to advise the State Superintendent on issues and needs of students who are deaf or hard of hearing, developing recommendations that will facilitate educational opportunities for students who are D/HH, and receiving input from professionals involved in providing educational services for students who are D/HH.

Council membership is currently full. However, if you are interested in nominating yourself for a position on the council, or if you are nominating someone in your district, please fill out the Council Nomination Form (and be sure to elaborate on the section that asks for a description of the nominee’s experience level- separate word documents encouraged), and email to Maria Rivera.

Once nominations are received, and a position becomes vacant, the council will vote on those nominations during the following Spring meeting. Nominations will then be routed for DPI approval, before a formal invitation is sent.

If you should have any questions, please email: maria.rivera@dpi.wi.gov and kathleen.lincoln@wsd.k12.wi.us
